A prayer of petition is a request to God asking Him to fulfil a need by His grace. When praying this prayer, one's heart must believe first, in the existence of God and secondly, that God is both willing and able to grant the petition. The key to having your prayers answered is this: Make sure you pray according to the will of God. The word petition from 1 John 5:15 is very important. Here’s how to pray the prayer of petition that’s in line with the will of God, a petition that is certain to be granted:
1. Go to the written Word of God.
Find scriptures that apply to your situation, and make those the foundation for your petition. Be specific when you go to God. If you want your prayers answered, you must be specific in your request. Be clear about what you are asking for. The need to be precise in your prayer requests is clearly illustrated in the story of the two blind men in Matthew 20:30-34.
30 And behold, two blind men sitting by the road, when they heard that Jesus was passing by, cried out, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!” 31 Then the multitude warned them that they should be quiet; but they cried out all the more, saying, “Have mercy on us, O Lord, Son of David!” 32 So Jesus stood still and called them, and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 33 They said to Him, “Lord, that our eyes may be opened.” 34 So Jesus had compassion and touched their eyes. And immediately their eyes received sight, and they followed Him. Take your time. Study and meditate on those promises pertaining to your need.
2. Consult with the Holy Spirit.
Get in communication with the Holy Spirit, and let Him help you develop your petition in detail. Listen for correction or instruction, and follow His leading as you seek His blessings. An important part of doing this is praying in the spirit Romans 8:26-27
26 Likewise the Spirit helps us in our weakness. For we do not know what to pray for as we ought, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us with groanings too deep for words.27 And He who searches hearts knows what is the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for the saints according to the will of God.
3. Pray all prayer in the name of Jesus.
Pray through faith in the name of Jesus Act. 3:16, John 14:13-14, anything You ask in my name, I will do. Remember, Phil. 2:9-11 says the name of Jesus has been lifted above every other name in both heaven and earth. Challenge your issue with Jesus' name.

4.Write your petition.
Writing your petition to the Lord as a formal request, using His Word, is a powerful tool Habakkuk 2:2
And the LORD answered me: “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it.
5. Pray the Scriptures.
With God’s promises in front of you, pray the answer through the prayer of petition. Petition Him with these promises from His Word. When you do, you are praying with precision, rather than around and around in circles. You won’t have to guess if your prayers are effective because they are based on the Word of God!
6. Have confidence in God.
God always backs His Word. You can be confident that God will answer your prayer because it’s based on the promises He has spoken directly to you. Part of being confident is refusing to think or speak anything to the contrary. When you walk away from your prayer, your countenance should be different than when you first came to the Lord because you know that what you have asked will come to pass.
7. Praise God for answered prayers
Matthew 21:16 say that praise stills the enemy and the avenger. Thanking God is faith in action. It says, “I believe before I see.” That’s the God kind of faith. This clears the channel between you and God, so you can receive from Him!1 Thessalonians 5:16-18 16 Rejoice always, 17 pray continually, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.
When you use these steps to pray the prayer of petition, you will hit the bulls-eye in prayer every time. You won’t have to shoot prayers out into the open, wondering if you have accomplished your aim—you’ll know you have! Remember it isn’t always instantaneous, so let patience have its perfect work, and keep standing in faith. God answers at the right time ALWAYS. Now, go forth, petition God based on His Word and expect your answer to come in Jesus' name.
